Greenhouse Gases Destruction

Through our patented Plascon® waste destruction technology, we are making a viable contribution in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. In the last financial year, Plascon® technology was used to eliminate a quantity of greenhouse gases, equivalent to the CO2 released by almost 1 million medium sized cars.

The Plascon® technology is used by SRL Plasma and is also provided around the world, to other companies for the elimination of non-CO2 green house gases such as refrigerants and the byproducts of the manufacture of refrigerants.

During the last financial year SRL Plasma’s plant in Victoria, Australia, destroyed 460 tonnes of refrigerant gas, predominantly R-22 which has a global warming potential (GWP) 1,700 times higher than that of CO2.  In total the plant eliminated greenhouse gases with a carbon dioxide equivalent (CDE) of over 1,500,000 tonnes. To put this in perspective:  the average medium sized car produces about 4 tons of CO2 per year, so Tottenham's effort is equivalent to a reduction of about 375,000 cars for one year.

SRL Plasma has supplied Plascon® plants to Quimobásicos S.A. de C.V and Honeywell Speciality Chemicals to work as an inline process in the elimination of R-23 (HCFC-23), a byproduct of the production of R-22 refrigerant gas.

Fight the Greenhouse Effect – Earn Carbon Credits

Financial incentives exist under the Kyoto Protocol for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

PLASCON® can be used to earn carbon credits via the destruction of greenhouse gases. Depending on the type of gas being destroyed and the location of the process, there are two categories of carbon credits that can be earned:

1. Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) under the Kyoto Protocol, or emission reductions under other regulatory schemes, that can be traded or used to offset a company’s own emissions

2. Voluntary emission reductions that can be sold as carbon offsets on markets around the globe

In order to be eligible for these programs, specific criteria need to be met. Several PLASCON®
plants are currently earning carbon credits.
